Kayak 001 - Great Auk - Stripping the Hull

The First Strip - Sheer Strip (Nov 15, 2012)

This is a 17 foot long boat and the longest boards I had were 12 feet long. The first strip (the sheer strip) should be full length because it is unsupported by other strips.
I used a through-the-thickness scarf joint to create full length strips.

I used a short strip as a guide to keep the joint in line. The guide strip has tape at the joint so it won't stick to the scarfed strips. The top of the forms was a convenient place to clamp the scarf joints.

The Sheer Strip Installed.

The strips are built up from the sheer line on both sides. I chose to fill the football shaped area at the bottom of the hull by first installing some keel strips and then working from the center toward the sides.
